BLACKHAWK!'s Warrior Wear Grid Fleece Garments are perfect as a mid-weight base layer for cold weather missions but are also suited for cool morning workouts and even casual around-town wear.

Warrior Wear grid fleece items are engineered to have a snug, yet stretch fit that allows a natural, full range of motion based on the demands of military and law enforcement personnel. Additionally, the contoured, athletic appearance allows easy layering without restricting your mobility.

Grid fleece is different from typical fleece garments because instead of a solid pile, the fabric is segmented with channels that create squares for a grid like appearance. Besides giving the material a soft stretch, this construction method offers several other advantages.

First, it saves weight and removes bulk from the garment. Notice the outside of this garment does not have the familiar pile look, it has a smoother finish, that's because grid fleece garments can provide equal or better warmth with less material now that the fleece pile is only on the inside. Grid fleece means your garments are much lighter with an incredible warmth to weight ratio.

Grid fleece works like this. The channels created in the fabric allow air to be trapped. Because this air is closer to your body it is naturally warmed. The grid also allows perspiration and moist air to evaporate through the channels much easier than a solid fleece jacket would. Overheating is also prevented with strategically placed side panels without the grid to offer even more breathability. This type of heat exchange makes these garments extremely comfortable to wear all year long by themselves and as layers in the colder months.

The grid fleece garments work great as part of your layering system. Since the outside material is smooth and slick, you won't get resistance from the garment hanging or bunching on the layer you're trying to put on over this jacket. Plus the reduced weight and bulk means your more likely to layer properly and stay warm.

BLACKHAWK! understood that there are many preferences for mid layers so there are quite a few options to cater to these needs. You can choose between full zip garments like the jacket and vest or the 3/4 zip pullover and hoodie. The full zip garments are meant to work with outer jackets and can be zipped into the Warrior Wear Shell Jak.

As a stand alone piece the 3/4 zip garments have two way zippers for added ventilation. The only difference is that the pullover is only collared, while the hoodie has a permanently attached hood.

All garments zip to a mandarin collar and also feature a zippered chest pocket that's is ideal for keys, sunglasses or ID. There is a media port to pass headphones from an mp3 player or phone.

Rounding out the features of the grid fleece garments are high quality YKK zippers and thumb loops on the sleeves of the jackets. The thumb loops are a great practical feature when you are layering or want to add some additional warmth to your wrists.

The full zip grid fleece jacket has one unique feature. Above the thumb hole is a nylon loop which can be used to attach the sleeves to your ECWCS style parka.

All these Warrior Wear grid fleece items are available in black or coyote brown. Order yours at uscav.com today. Watch the video here.

The Lowa Zephyr line of boots offers the soldier in the field a lightweight, breathable and comfortable assault boot with the comfort and high-end features Lowa boots are known for.

View our product video here.

This German based boot company has been building world-class mountaineering footwear since 1923. And with almost 90 years in the boot making industry, they're bringing the expertise in mountain and hiking boot designs to the modern combat boot.

The fit you'll get with the Zephyr is that of a running shoe as it was designed with that purpose in mind. This isn't a boot to ruck cross-country with, but is ideal for anyone who spends lots of time in a vehicle and needs ultimate stability when they have to hit the ground.

The sole of the Lowa Zephyr line of boots has a stickier rubber than your typical combat boot. This makes it have great traction on any surface. It's much softer too, designed for maximum shock attenuation, it's one of the most comfortable combat boots for running and other high impact activities.

A nylon through-going stabilizer gives the boot torsional rigidity to help prevent ankle twisting.

A great feature that sets the Zephyr's apart form other traditional combat boot designs is the distinct bi-injected PU midsole and monowrap frame. The use of PU, or polyurethane, doubles this boots average life for shock attenuation versus an EVA midsole. The monowrap frame and mid-sole structure, is directly attached to the boot via a injection molding process and is bonded to the upper and sole of the boot. This frame envelops the foot, giving critical support and protection but also allowing the boot to retain specific design features essential to any combat boot.

The frame uses a skeletonized design, which helps your foot breathe, reduces weight and excess bulk. The cut outs in the ankle area greatly improve your range of ankle movement without pinching. The monowrap design also allows the upper to have minimal to no padding around the forefoot which also aids in ventilation and keeps the foot cool.

The midsole is also molded up the toe kicker to provide some impact protection to the toes.

The suede leather fully protects the sides of your foot and the nylon mesh panels on top increase airflow.

Nylon webbing loops are used in the forefoot. These help reduce weight and are designed in a way that grasps the foot for a secure fit.

Metal eyelets are used up the remainder of the boot and allow quick cinching of the laces.

A half inch of foam padding is used to surround and support the ankle. Also the tongue is padded down the middle, but the gussets remain un-padded so they will lay flat. Re-enforcement of the tongue ensures that the laces won't cut into your foot.

Inside you'll find a climate control full mesh liner which also aids in the overall breathability and moisture wicking properties of this boot.

The insole is also topped with this climate control mesh. A 1/4 inch of padding is sandwiched between the mesh and a semi-rigid base. This works in conjunction with the injected midsole and frame for a total support system.

The 8" Zephyr is available in Gore-Tex only, denoted by GTX in it's name. This feature was added by request of soldiers in theater, because having a Gore-Tex boot in a desert environment may not seem necessary, but is critical when you encounter less than sanitary obstacles in urban environments.

If you don't need a full 8" boot, the Zephyr GTX is also available in a 6" cut in both desert or black.

Or you can opt for the non-gore-tex 6" Zephyr if you don't need a waterproof liner in your boot.

At just under 2 and a half pounds for the 6" and just 4 oz. more for the 8" these are very lightweight for such a stable boot.

Overall Lowa boots are made extremely well and are robust enough to last. The stitching and materials are top notch and are prefect for a boot to wear outside the wire.

The evolution of the tactical response uniform is here! The newly designed T.R.U. Xtreme line of apparel by Tru-Spec is new for August 2010.

Everything has been re-designed from the ground up with this garment system. Specifically tailored to the tactical operator, the features found in the T.R.U. Xtreme are high-end without the price that you might expect.

The T.R.U. Xtreme system consists of 4 total garments: a shirt, pant, combat shirt and vest. The addition of a vest and a combat shirt to a tactical uniform gives the operator an efficient uniform that can be mission ready at a moments notice.

All that is required is to remove the uniform's vest and throw on body armor over the combat shirt. With a light, breathable base layer as the body of the combat shirt, the operator stays cooler and is more comfortable. When the mission is over, simply don the uniforms vest again to maintain a clean appearance.

The shirt and combat shirt both feature two slanted shoulder pockets with VELCRO® loop sided panels for attaching insignia. The angle of these pockets allow for quick access to the contents, but in addition to this top opening, a side zippered pocket is available as well behind the main pocket.

Tru-Spec has also included with each shirt a forearm document pocket that is removable and fits either the right or left sleeve. Mission notes, maps and codes can be safely stored under the water resistant window covered by a privacy flap. This flap has integrated slots for storing pens, markers or slim penlights. Additional pouches will be made available by Tru-Spec for various mission specific requirements in late 2010 - 2011.

The T.R.U. Xtreme pant could be considered one of the most comfortable tactical pants on the market. The slider waist is made to move with you and expands up to two inches. This is the same design found in the popular 24-7 tactical pant and included by request of some of the most elite operators.

Adding to the range of movement the entire pant is articulated to naturally follow the leg's bend and a diamond shaped gusted crotch provides a more relaxed fit.

Six total pockets and two knee pad pockets give this pant plenty of storage.

Both shirts as well as the pant feature Super Fabric® patches provide for extra high abrasion resistance to high wear areas in the knees and elbows. Super Fabric® is designed to be cut and stain resistant and extends the life of your uniform versus traditional re-enforced designs.

All of the garments in the T.R.U. Xtreme garment system are made from rugged lightweight 50/50 Nylon Cotton (NyCo) Ripstop fabric for added comfort in any season.

Solid colors will be available August 15, 2010 while MULTICAM® will be available October 15, 2010.

Experience the T.R.U. Xtreme evolution atwww.uscav.com.

With Memorial Day almost upon us, we thought it would be a good idea to highlight some of the many great groups groups that help our men and women in uniform. Note: we have compiled a more complete list on our site here.

The United Service Organization
These are the people that help keep up the morale of our warfighters. Whether they are greeting military travelers at airports, promoting military events at home or sending a piece of home to deployed soldiers, the USO has been there every step of the way. You can help the USO by volunteering or by donating funds to support their mission. Lastly, an easy way to express your support is by sponsoring a care package. For just $25 you can send about $75 worth of need items along with a personal note of support.

The Wounded Warrior Project
The WWP is dedicated to making sure our service men and women are not forgotten and have grown to be come an advocate for those injured from their service to our country. You too can get involved by becoming a Wounded Warrior advocate. Help a service person find a job by coaching them on their resume. Volunteer at an event. Or donate money and help sponsor many of the direct programs that benefit wounded warriors. The greatest casualty is being forgotten. Help the WWP to make sure that doesn't happen.

eMail our Military
When the Depart of Defense canceled the popular Any Service member postal program, many average Americans lost a way to connect and support their deployed service personnel. The eMOM or (eMail our Military) group was started as a way to fill that gap. There are many simple things you can do and they don't take a lot of effort or money. Check out their site to see how you can help.

Veterans Airlift Command
Wounded troops from our recent conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan sometimes require extensive travel in order to reach their family or medical facilities for care. The VAC sprang into action as a grass roots effort to utilize a special group of people: Private plane owners and their fleet of aircraft. These passionate Americans have since formed a network that pairs a wounded warrior with a pilot or aircraft owner to help them meet their needs. If you are an aircraft owner or pilot, consider adding yourself to the network or donate funds to help defer the cost of fuel and other expenses. Click here and help be the wind beneath the Veterans Airlift Command.

Dog Tags for Kids
Nothing warms your heart more than the smiling face of a youngster. All to often though, the children of a deployed service member have a burden they aren't ready for. This organization grew from the need to keep the connection between families, even if they were miles apart. Now you too can support a deployed soldier with children by sponsoring a simple set of engraved dog tags. Click here to get behind this worthy cause.

With Memorial Day fast approaching, we thought it would be prudent to talk about the history of this day and what we, as Americans, should be doing to keep the spirit alive.

Memorial Day originally was called Decoration Day and was created to honor the Union dead of the Civil War. Over time, as hostilities over the bloody war between the states subsided, the more inclusive "Memorial" replaced "Decoration" and the perception of a national holiday grew. Memorial Day became even more popular following World War II, but it wasn't until 1967 that it became a federal holiday. During the 1970s the traditional date of Memorial Day was finally established, the last monday in May.

That was the abridged version, if you want more details, learn more about Memorial Day here.

What does Memorial Day mean to you now? How does it rank in your life? Obviously, we should thank our armed forces everyday that we live in a free country. This weekend especially, though, we need to take a moment to remember the fallen.

Memorial Day weekend isn't just about opening our pools and grilling hot dogs. Countless soldiers have paid the ultimate price for the freedoms we enjoy and sometimes take for granted. Please remember, wherever you are on Monday, May 31st, take a moment at 3pm to remember that freedom isn't free. It was paid for by the men and women of our brave armed forces. Learn more about what you can do on this day here.

On our recent product e-mail newsletter, we rolled out our traditional St. Patrick’s Day discount. As we do from time to time, we included a 15% off discount.

Unfortunately, we had to a put an asterisk on that offer.

5.11 Tactical® has been experiencing a number of violations of it’s minimum advertised price (MAP) policy and so recently has decided to enforce a ban on percentage and dollar off discounts for their product line.

So, while will still continue to offer a great selection of 5.11 Tactical products as a full line dealer, we have to comply with this restriction. You may not be able to save as much money on a 5.11 purchase as in the past, but you can rest assured that industry wide, you will be paying a fair price.

Now, just because there is a MAP policy in place doesn’t mean we can’t offer any incentives. Starting right now you can get free shipping with your purchase of $75 or more of 5.11 Tactical products (thru March 24th). There are also a great many gift with purchase options as well. Click here to check those out.

Check all of the great 5.11 Tactical products here.

Eberlestock started their business making custom rifle stocks and then hunting packs specifically designed to carry long guns comfortably. Over the years, Eberlestock picked up a loyal following within the military and law enforcement sniper community and that market has evolved Eberlestock's products with more tactical options. The Eberlestock Gunslinger series and the newer Terminator Pack are popular items. Things seemed to be picking up steam until disaster struck.

Just before the 2010 SHOT Show, their main warehouse in Idaho was destroyed by fire.

We spoke to the owner, Glen Eberle, at SHOT as part of a scheduled new product meeting. Although the fire certainly weighed heavy with Glen, he assured us that this event would make his company stronger. We were impressed with his determination and had no doubt he meant every word. However, in the short term, we understood that supplies would be constrained.

Eberlestock will be back to full inventory by the middle of April. So bear with us as stock may be slim for the time being, but don't hesitate to make a purchase of an Eberlestock item as every sale will help them raise the capital they need to recover.

We also understand that while you may not be able to find what you need at U.S. Cavalry, we realize that keeping a valued partner in business is best for you and the industry. So please keep buying Eberlestock wherever and whenever you can.

Gerber has recently introduced the successor to their popular 06 Auto, the DMF or dual multi-function knife. As it's name implies, this isn't your average pocket folder. It was built specifically to meet todays military requirements with features that are well thought out.

The DMF sports a matte black, 1/8 inch thick, S30V blade with nearly 3 inches of cutting surface - a third of which utilizes some very effective serrations. One of the biggest differences from the 0

6 Auto is the tanto point. Note the false back edge to the blade that will definitely aid in penetrating tasks.

The choil area (section between the serrated section of the blade and the handle) is about 1/2 inch long and notched so that you can really grip up on the blade for detailed cutting tasks.

When you're looking at an automatic knife, the deployment of the blade is what it's all about. The DMF's deployment system is truly ambidextrous featuring a sliding release that also functions as the locking mechanism. Gerber really put some thought into this. Take a look at the stair-stepping on this release. It will surely give you positive traction whether wet, muddy or even gloved.

For those of you familiar with Benchmade's Auto Axis lock, it seems that Gerber's design is just as rugged and reliable.

Some may find the deployment speed lacking, but the military found that a slower deployment system was less likely to jump out of someone's grip that some overzealous autos can tend to do. In another example of the thought put into this design, activating the safety seems like a natural movement once the blade is open. The safety's locking bar is located on the spine of the handle which also lends to it's ambidextrous operation. Just slide the heavily jimped safety bar toward the blade to prevent the sliders from accidentally releasing the blade in use.

This safety can also be deployed in the closed position to prevent unintentional opening, but seems unnecessary considering this isn't a traditional push-button auto. That means that you can cary this and not have to worry about disengaging a safety before you deploy the blade.

The handle on the DMF is made of two 1/8 inch G10 slabs that give positive traction in the hand. Underneath these slabs are two 1/16 inch steel liners that ad to the heft of this knife, but also the strength.

The DMF weighs in at just under 7 oz. Keep in mind that this isn't intended as an everyday pocket folder, so some extra weight is to be expected for such a hard use knife.

Some other things we noticed:

  • Overall ergonomics of the handle are excellent for those with medium to large sized hands.
  • Steel strike pommel. This can be effectively used as a pressure point device when you don't need the deadly force of the blade. An oversized lanyard hole allows you to tie a tether or wrist loop to when in an operational area where there is a high risk of loosing your blade.
  • There is a large forefinger groove and slightly smaller middle finger groove, while the remaining section is left coarsely jimped. This design works equally well in a forward grip as well as a reverse grip.
  • The pocket clip on this DMF is reversible but only provides for tip-up carry.
  • Another nice touch is that the area under the pocket clip has been smoothed to prevent excess wear on your pocket that can normally occur with course G10 checkering.
  • While in the pocket, the clip leaves about 3/4 of an inch of the handle exposed, giving plenty to grab onto to withdraw the knife. An ultra-deep pocket clip, like those found on some edc knives would be impractical for the DMF's tactical role.

Lastly, Gerber provides two carry methods for the DMF. For a traditional belt style you can use the included nylon sheath or opt for the blackened steel clip for pocket carry.

The new Gerber DMF is a value packed tactical auto that will serve you well on your next mission.

So it is official now. Secretary of the Army John McHugh announced that Soldiers deploying to Afghanistan will get MultiCam uniforms.

According to Col. Bill Cole, project manager for Soldier Protection and Individual Equipment, MultiCam was “21 percent less detectable than UCP,” the pattern used in ACUs.

Friday, February 19, 2010

MultiCam TRU ShirtIf you were left scratching your head over the decision to field the Universal Camouflage Pattern (UCP). You weren't alone.

Heck, everybody knows there is no such thing as a universal camo. Right? Is there really a pattern that can work in all environments?

Umm...not really, but with our current level of technology, MultiCam is perhaps the best. And by all indications that the Army is actually going to field it... sort of.

After a recent round of tests, the Army Chief of Staff, Gen. George Casey has recommended that the Army adopt MultiCam. For the time being, only for those serving in Operation Enduring Freedom (OEF) and only after the Secretary of the Army gives final approval, which is expected soon.

So how did this happen? What is MultiCam? How is it so good?

Well dear reader, follow along and we'll give you the overview, pointing you to some great folks that have already done a lot reporting on this subject.

MultiCam logo
What is MultiCam? Back when the Army was developing the next generation uniform, the successor to the BDU, the army was also trying to come up with a solution to a huge logistical problem: fielding different sets of uniforms every time our forces deployed to a combat zone. Now in the field of new camo, our neighbors to the north were actually leading the pack. Through research the Canadian military had discovered several key things: Black in a camo was bad (it attracts the eye) and digital was good (it helps break up the human figure). So combine a digital camo pattern with some colors that individually work in the desert, woodland and urban areas, throw in some angled pockets and you've got the new ACU.

So wait, what about MultiCam? Oh yeah. The Army actually conducted tests pitting their UCP pattern against a new design by Crye Associates. These guys did their homework, they did all these photographic measurements of environments in different lighting, the whole nine yards. Basically Crye used Photoshop to build a color palette that worked with the majority of their environments and MultiCam was born.

After the tests, the Crye pattern along with along with two others (Desert All Over Brush and Woodland Track Mod) came out ahead of UCP in the Army tests.

So how come the Army went with UCP? No freaking idea. Guess it was the home team advantage. Money. Family ties. Who knows.

So fast forward to 2009. The recently departed Rep. John Murtha actually had a hand in all of this because he pressured the Army to conduct another camo trial based on the feedback coming from Afghanistan. The ACU sucked in Iraq and it really sucks here!

Late last year, the Army took samples of the available camo patterns and actually sent a team to Afghanistan to the do the light test thing again. After that, MultiCam and UCP, now with a fourth color (Coyote) would battle one more round. This time the two camo patterns would actually be fielded by two battalions, each with a different pattern.

Not much was known about this part of the test. Those following along would come across photos on the web, but no details have come out. One can only guess that MultiCam is finally getting the credit it's due and it's creators, hopefully, some measure of accomplishment.

So what makes MultiCam so good? Check this out.

Hello there.

It's been two years since we jumped on the social media bandwagon. We first experimented with product videos on YouTube. Then in quick succession we dipped our toes into the waters of twitter and facebook. Even though we are still trying to figure out the Mafia War thing, we felt it necessary to complete the next component of our social brand: the company blog.

We have tons of ideas on blog content and hope to use this medium to share with you a lot of great things.

But this isn't a one way street either.

We hope to solicit feedback from you (both the good and the bad) to help fine tune the gear we carry, improve on the places we fall short and provide the best possible experience for those on the front lines.

We hope you'll join us.

P.S. A big THANK YOU to all of the men and women who have supported our business for over 35 years. 2009 was a bit rough, but because of your loyalty, we are still here. Ready to serve.
